Global Impact

International Advisory Expert and 2023 winner of the Global Law Experts, Kelly Bagla has become a leading expert in helping foreign-based companies enter the U.S. Market. Her three-fold experience as an immigrant, lawyer and entrepreneur has provided her with insight and expertise to make her ideally suited for this ever-expanding legal niche.

As the country with the world’s largest economy, the United States offers some of the best business opportunities in the world. Bagla Law Firm helps foreign-based businesses leverage this massive market by getting on the right legal footing and setting themselves on a path to success.

Helping foreign-based business owners achieve their own American Dreams seems like the perfect combination of “paying-it-forward” and “coming full circle” for Kelly. Having come to the U.S. with dreams of her own, she is now in the position to help foreign business owners tap into the Land of Opportunity as she did. “I’ve always said that it takes a business owner to understand the needs of another business owner. I will add that it takes someone who has successfully entered the U.S. market to understand the needs of someone who wants to do the same!”

Her latest book, “Doing Business in the United States,” is an overview of the legal guidance she provides her own foreign-based clients planning to enter the U.S. market. The guide includes some of the key aspects of doing business and setting up in the United States. In addition is a brief review of the U.S. legal system and some of the laws most relevant to doing business in the United States. The book provides a great starting point for any business entering the U.S. market.

Staying on Top of Her Game

Staying updated on the latest legal developments and industry best practices is a continual process. Kelly belongs to multiple legal and business associations and was recently honored to be welcomed to the board of directors for the Lincoln Club Business League of San Diego.  Kelly stays current with several legal periodicals and often researches specific legal cases and new laws that affect her clients. In addition, she is an avid reader, devouring between 60 and 75 books a year. She makes it her practice to study media and publications on business news, leadership, strategy, and mindset to stay abreast of best practices, trends, and the changing business climate.

A Culture of Trust and Loyalty

The cornerstone principle of Bagla Law Firm can be summed up in the word, INTEGRITY. Being REAL with her clients is essential to Kelly and her team. They never want a client to feel intimidated by pretentious legalese. They respect each business owner’s knowledge and expertise. Kelly explains, “It’s my job to make the law understandable so that they can make the right informed decisions for their business.”

Clients appreciate that “what they see is what they get,” with Bagla Law Firm. For instance, if Kelly cannot help a business owner with a specific issue, she will let them know this up front.  Not every lawyer is a good fit for every client. Kelly is honest in helping clients know if Bagla Law Firm is the right fit for them. She often recommends other attorneys when legal issues fall outside her areas of expertise. And she often receives referrals from other like-minded law firms.

For Kelly, Integrity includes being genuine. “My true motivation is to help the client. Through the years we have established relationships built on trust and respect. Clients understand that I will be fair and put their interests first.” She believes if she takes good care of her clients with their best interests in mind, the rewards will come her way through client loyalty, recommendations, and a growing business and reputation. This kind of genuine partnership with her clients has built mutual trust, comfort, and respect through the years.

Influencing the Next Generation

Kelly has become an influencer in the fields of law and business. Recently she was named in the Top 50 Legal Influencers by the San Diego Journal. Her dual roles as attorney and entrepreneur have given her unique opportunities to influence young entrepreneurs as well as aspiring attorneys.

Kelly has experienced first-hand that the American Dream is still possible if entrepreneurs are willing to take the risk, learn their business, and dedicate themselves to the hard work and persistence needed to succeed. “I feel a responsibility to promote the opportunities and benefits of the American Dream to young entrepreneurs and aspiring corporate attorneys,” she says emphatically.

Her mission to help entrepreneurs reach their own success has expanded beyond her legal practice. Each of her three businesses and six books align with her purpose to inform, equip, and inspire entrepreneurs to pursue their own American Dream. Young men and women come to her personally for mentoring, and Kelly has been excited and gratified to see them catch the vision.

Balancing Life’s Demands

Up every day at 3:00 a.m., Kelly has breakfast with her husband, Brent, afterward heading together to the gym for a strenuous workout. She then takes her beloved Pitbulls (“the girls”) for a vigorous walk in the park. A former body-building champion, Kelly thrives on exercise, good nutrition, and fresh air. By 7:30 a.m. she has fed the girls, gotten dressed and opened her office for business. It is important for her team to start early, especially having International and East Coast clients.  The remainder of her 10–11-hour work day is loaded with meetings, legal services, business issues and of course… dreaming up more ventures to pursue!

Each evening Kelly and Brent make time to have dinner together. Depending on clients’ needs, Kelly might work an additional 2-4 hours after dinner. “I am a woman of my word. So, if I have promised to deliver a service by a specific date, I will work as long as it takes to deliver even sooner than promised if possible.”

So how does she do all this and have time for a satisfying personal life? Kelly would say that starting her days early with exercise gives her the energy and clarity to do so much. Great organization, maintaining a winner’s mindset, and having the right team around her also provide an important edge. And she is quick to add, “Taking time to relax, refresh, and revive makes me more effective to work hard and be more effective.”

Working hard is important to Kelly. Playing hard is just as key. Together, she and Brent plan vacations throughout the year. Some are to exotic in distant destinations, others are mini-breaks to catch their breath and reconnect. “We genuinely love just being together. While I am always accessible to my VIP clients, Brent and I set aside our weekends primarily to hang out together with the girls. That is my happy place!” Kelly says with a big smile.

Leading by Example

Kelly’s philosophy on leadership starts with leading by example. She sets the pace not only through her work ethic, drive, and dedication, she sets the bar for positivity and high morale. “There are many skills that I can train my staff to do well. But I will never hire someone who does not come on board with a positive attitude.” In fact, Kelly has been known to send employees home to get refreshed if their attitude is affecting the work environment.

In addition to leading by example, Kelly fosters trust and loyalty within the workplace. She invests in her staff by mentoring, training, and giving them opportunities to develop personally and professionally. She realizes that in some cases this will mean that this on-the-job training experience will prepare employees to set out for themselves in business or other career advancement. Kelly is supportive of their career growth and asks in return that while a team member is in her employment that they treat her business as if it was their own. She asks them to put their heart and best efforts into making her business successful as long as they are part of her team.

And just as in her relationship with clients, Kelly is genuine with her employees. She deeply cares for them and intentionally develops relationships built on trust, care, and respect.
