A Personal Journey That Shaped My Career

My journey into patient safety and healthcare leadership was not one I chose—it was one that chose me. In 2003, my son was born with a severe and complex congenital heart defect. The initial fear of navigating his medical condition was overwhelming, but it was nothing compared to what came next. Due to lapses in care and communication errors, he contracted a staph infection during his hospitalization. What should have been a controlled, well-managed recovery turned into a grueling 100-day hospital stay that nearly cost him his life.

As a mother, I was devastated. The experience left an indelible mark on me and became the catalyst for my lifelong commitment to patient safety. I refused to let other families suffer the way mine had. I turned my grief into action, dedicating my career to improving communication, transparency, and safety within healthcare systems. Today, as a Patient Safety Director, I am honored to lead initiatives that prevent medical errors and improve healthcare quality for patients and providers alike.

A Daily Drive to Make a Difference

What motivates me every day is the knowledge that my work can prevent harm. Every policy change, every training session, and every conversation I have with healthcare professionals has the potential to save a life. I don’t see my job as just a profession—it’s a mission. My son’s experience fuels my drive to ensure that no patient’s safety is compromised due to system failures or preventable mistakes.

I also find immense motivation in mentoring future healthcare leaders. Educating others about patient safety, risk management, and quality improvement is not just about compliance—it’s about changing the culture of healthcare. I want to inspire professionals to see beyond checklists and truly embrace patient-centered care.

Staying Ahead in a Rapidly Changing Healthcare Landscape

The healthcare industry is constantly evolving, with new technologies, regulations, and patient expectations emerging regularly. To stay adaptable, I prioritize continuous learning. I actively engage with research, attend industry conferences, and participate in leadership forums focused on patient safety and risk management.

Additionally, I leverage technology to improve patient safety. Data analytics, artificial intelligence, and real-time reporting systems have transformed how we identify and mitigate risks. By embracing these innovations, I ensure that my organization remains at the forefront of patient safety advancements.

Cultivating Innovation and a Culture of Safety

Creating a culture of innovation and safety requires more than policies—it requires a mindset shift. In my role, I foster an environment where healthcare professionals feel empowered to speak up about safety concerns without fear of retribution. Transparency and open communication are the cornerstones of my leadership approach.

One of the most impactful initiatives has been implementing a system-based approach to adverse event reviews. Rather than placing blame on individuals, we examine underlying system failures and develop solutions that prevent future errors. This approach not only enhances safety but also fosters trust among healthcare teams.

Leadership Philosophy: Leading with Purpose and Passion

Leadership, to me, is about service. I lead by example, demonstrating integrity, empathy, and resilience in every aspect of my work. I believe that true leadership is not about authority—it’s about inspiring others to see their potential and empowering them to make a difference.

I inspire my team by sharing real stories of patients and families who have been affected by medical errors and stories of success where interventions saved lives. By making patient safety personal, I ensure that my team remains deeply committed to our mission.

Lessons from Challenges and Failures

My journey has not been without setbacks. Early in my career, I encountered resistance to change. Implementing patient safety initiatives often meant challenging long-standing practices and addressing cultural resistance.

One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of persistence and strategic communication. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but by building relationships, presenting data-driven evidence, and showing empathy, I’ve been able to gain buy-in from even the most skeptical stakeholders.Balancing Work and Personal Life Balancing a demanding career with personal life is challenging, but I prioritize what matters most—my family and my well-being. I’ve learned that self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Whether it’s dedicating time to exercise, setting boundaries, or simply being present with loved ones, I ensure that I maintain a balance that allows me to give my best both professionally and personally.

Exciting Projects on the Horizon

Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to announce the upcoming release of my book, From Pain to Purpose, where I share my personal journey of turning tragedy into advocacy. In this deeply personal and professional memoir, I explore the lessons I’ve learned, the impact of patient safety failures, and how healthcare leaders can create a culture of safety.

In addition, I am launching a national speaking tour focused on patient safety, transparency in healthcare, and leadership in crises. My goal is to share my expertise to inspire healthcare leaders to prioritize patient-centered safety strategies. If you are looking for a dynamic speaker to educate, motivate, and empower your audience—whether at conferences, corporate events, or training sessions—I would love to collaborate with you.
